Fidgets have become controversial since the fidget spinner became popular last year. I believe that fidgets can be beneficial if used correctly. There is a time and place for fidgets such as when a person needs to sit still or is having a difficult time handling a situation. Imagine that you are sitting in a meeting or workshop listening to a speaker talk. What are you doing during this time? Are you sitting still? Are you doodling? What about tapping your foot? I know as an adult I cannot sit still for long workshops and need something to fidget with.
Some rules I have for fidgets are:
1. They cannot disrupt others, if they are loud or could distract another child at school then they should not be used there. Instead of a fidget spinner at school something like Thera putty would be a better choice as it can be held in your hand and not seen by others.
2. Fidgets are not toys they are tools. Fidgets are tools to help with self-regulation, attention, and calming among other benefits.
3. Do not share your fidgets with others who do not need them and do not know the purpose of them.
We have many fidgets in our home that used daily by everyone in our family. We keep some in our diaper bag, children's school bags, vehicles, and a basket at home.

Homemade fidgets:
1. Water beads in a balloon
2. Cornstarch in a balloon
3. Cornstarch magic
4. Cut up pool noodles
5. Sensory bags- There are many different variations of these on Pinterest from hair gel to shaving cream.
6. Dried beans in a sock
When looking for fidgets pick one or two to see what your child likes and dislikes. I know the DNA light ball did not work for our family but Thera putty is always a hit and Artist even has some at school. You do not have to spend a lot of money on fidgets as some can be made with items you have at home. It is also surprising how much you can find at the dollar store that can be used as a fidget or to make a fidget.
