Fine motor skills

Fine motor skills are often delayed for those with SPD, however with some work they can over come these delays. Fine motor development can be included in your sensory diet, gross motor skills are important for fine motor skills, by strengthening the core muscles you strengthen chest and back muscles which in turn strengthens your arms and down to you wrist and fingers.

1. Thera putty is great for fine motor skills and can be used in many different ways.

  • stretching the putty
  • hide small objects in the putty so you have to dig and pull at the putty to get them out

2. Playdough
  • cut Playdough with scissors
  • rolling out snakes

3. Kinetic sand
  • squeeze the sand
  • draw in sand with your finger
4. Tweezer
  • moving pom poms from one container to another

  • twisting the nuts up and down the bolt. 
6. Sensory box
  • pulling ribbon through the box
  • the box can be made in many different sizes including a smaller container for traveling

7. Coloring
  • use small crayons and not markers as crayons encourage proper pencil grip
  • also works on hand eye coordination 
It is important to start working on fine motor skills from a young age and continue working on as you get older. If you notice any delays in fine motor skills it is suggested that you get advice from an Occupation Therapist.
